Let m g/mol be the molar mass of M. In X, molar ratio M : O = 2 : 1 38.1/m : (42.9 - 32.1)/16 = 2 : 1 38.1/m : 0.3 = 2 : 1 38.1/m = 0.6 m = 63.5 In Y, mole ratio M : O = 12.7/63.5 : (15.9 - 12.7)/16 = 0.2 : 0.2 = 1 : 1 Empirical formula of Y = MO
