When 127g of copper reacts with excess oxygen, 143g of an oxide are formed. Determine the empirical formula of oxide formed.
最佳解答:
Number of mole of copper reacted = mass / molar mass = 127 / 63.5 = 2.0 mol Mass of oxygen in the oxide = 143 – 127 = 16 g Number of mole of oxygen reacted = mass / molar mass = 16 / 16.0 = 1.0 mol So, molar ratio of copper to oxygen = 2 : 1 Therefore, the empirical formula is Cu2O.
其他解答:
Molecular weight of copper = 63.5g, molecular weight of oxygen = 16g 127 g of copper = 127g/63.5g = 2 Therefore 2 moles of copper reacts with oxygen to give 143 g of oxide (which must contain 2 moles of copper). 143 g =63.5g x 2 moles of copper + 16g oxygen. therefore the empirical formula is Cu2O.
